The indie festival is the brainchild of music promoter, Cyprian Bu\u015b, with <strong><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/frontrowheroes.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Front Row Heroes gig promotion collective<\/a><\/strong>, which has been running in Krakow for 10 years and exalting Polish and foreign artists alike over that time. According to the organisers, the main mission of the festival is to \u201cintegrate local musicians and those from around the world, DJs, journalists, photographers, graphic designers, promoters, and other artists, as well as regular concert goers, at the festival\u2019s various events.\u201d Now we need live music more than ever, and although last year&#8217;s events were still streamed, this year we luckily had the opportunity to see acts live again \u2013 this time in the flesh&#8230;.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>[\/nk_text][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"#trupa\"><strong>Trupa Trupa \u279e<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"#noise\"><strong>The Band of Endless Noise\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u279e<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"#whybother\"><strong>Why Bother?\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u279e<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/6&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2289&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221; equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/5&#8243;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"whybother\">And how much flesh there was! The filthy grind of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/whybother666.bandcamp.com\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Why Bother? <\/i><\/a><\/strong><i>\u2013 <\/i>a project founded by Bartosz \u201cBoro\u201d Borowski (<a href=\"https:\/\/lonkersee.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lonker See<\/a>, B3-33), Maciej Szkudlarek (Lastryko, Logophonic), \u0141ukasz Kuma\u0144ski (Me and That Man, Mulk) with Rafa\u0142 Jurewicz on vocal \u2013 blew the dust off proceedings and our skewed expectations: think what a Polish fusion of Iggy and the Stooges and the glamy trash of Turbo Negro would look, feel and sound like. The members were showing off some serious unshaven leg, leopardskin blouses hugging all the curves, pouting galore, with lead singer Jurewicz stomping around the stage like a flamboyant, tipsy peacock. It was mesmerizing stuff, but far from purely theatre: the musical performance also went unapologetically for the jugular \u2013 naughty, raucous and pulsating with visceral, sexual energy. They tore into numbers from their 2004 album <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bandlessnoise.bandcamp.com\/album\/riders-on-the-bikes-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Riders on the Bikes<\/a><\/strong>. Later, saw them explore more esoteric, droney and off-kilter numbers, particularly <i>W<\/i><i>alking Backwards<\/i>, <i>You Can Hide <\/i>and <i>Let&#8217;s Destroy the People<\/i>. The rhythmic strobe of the drums and bass creating the perfect canvas for lead singer, Grzegorz Kwiatkowski, to warm up his vocal chords; the reverb-heavy desperation of the pleading refrain echoing out. It sounded at times like he<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>was saying \u201cI&#8217;m fine\u201d but of course that&#8217;s impossible \u2013 the protagonist of the song is anything but \u201cfine\u201d. Tone set.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The band settled into their stride with <strong><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lA0mUtUIWSM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Dream About You<\/i><\/a><\/strong>, opening number from their 2019 album <i>Of The Sun<\/i>. Its sublime bass-line catapults us into a horror-filled, obsession-riddled world. A genuinely nightmarish slice of dark power pop that heralds the band&#8217;s undisputed mastery of mood, dynamic, melody and menace: \u201cNo one, no way. No one, nowhere.\u201d It just sounds so fucking mean \u2013 you cannot help but love it in a perverted, masochistic way. <i>Uniforms<\/i> is chaotic and grating \u2013 most likely deliberately so \u2013 shredding whatever lazy assumptions the audience had mistakenly garnered thus far. <i>Remainder<\/i> has some lovely Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth guitar at the start, and while wearing its 90&#8217;s influences rather overtly, it still manages to be comfortable in its own skin. Sonically, it reminds me of one of my favourite bands from that era \u2013 <strong><a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sDHhzATxIIQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swervedriver<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 hard and loud but dreamy, with thick layers of sounds breaking over the audience. <i>Twitch<\/i> is the new single from their new album and getting lots of attention from<strong> <a style=\"color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/search\/top?q=bbc%20radio%206%20music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC<\/a> <\/strong>with Iggy Pop also a big fan of the band. The song&#8217;s a demented barrage of pounding drums, a juggernaut of metal and steel sonically hammering you \u2013 but rather than move away, you edge closer&#8230;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_block_quote icon_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221; vc_css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1638512955121{background-color: rgba(109,64,89,0.25) !important;*background-color: rgb(109,64,89) !important;}&#8221; text_color=&#8221;#ffffff&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h5><strong><em>We are taken to places we may not always want to go, but there is a desperate urgency and honest candour to the band\u2019s art and their bold mastery of sound; they blend dream-pop\/psych-rock\/avant-punk soundscapes and so much more. Maybe a new genre needs creating: doom-\/nightmare-pop. <\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Shaun O&#8217;Neill<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_block_quote][nk_text]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lA0mUtUIWSM[\/nk_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][nk_text]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sDHhzATxIIQ[\/nk_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row&#8221; equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221; awb_type=&#8221;color&#8221; awb_stretch=&#8221;1&#8243; awb_color=&#8221;#6d4059&#8243;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><i>Long Time Ago <\/i>makes it unequivocally clear that the past has never really passed and will never pass for that matter, for each day we live it: \u201cLong time ago! No one! No way!\u201d As Joyce&#8217;s protagonist in Ulysses says: \u201cHistory is a nightmare from which I am trying to awaken.\u201d Trupa Trupa play the soundtrack to that nightmare, with the band&#8217;s role to make things a bit more bearable even though the sky might be falling down. There&#8217;s no doubting their skill for a pop hook, as encore concluder <i>To Me <\/i>attests to. The last song on the album J<i>olly New Songs <\/i>from 2017, it<i> <\/i>caresses us lovingly with its ostentatious, sugarcoated backing vocal, only to violently smother us to death with incongruous shards of heavy distorted guitar that unapologetically stab at our delicate frayed nerves, tearing at our wounded psyches like razor wire. Throughout the set, the vocal interplay between Kwiatkowski&#8217;s passion and Wojtek Juchniewicz&#8217;s high-priest-like delivery of effect-laden, overdriven, guttural incantations is remarkable, perfectly encapsulating what Kwiatkowski \u2013 a published poet \u2013 calls \u201cvital pessimism\u201d: perhaps the very pith and core of Trupa Trupa.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2276&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Kwiatkowski&#8217;s lyrics touch on issues that continue to blight us collectively: the failure of civil society to offer up anything but shallow self-interest and convenience at times of crises, insidious populism, the abandonment of basic Christian values, the abhorrent ignorance of holocaust denial \u2013 perfect subject matter for our information-saturated post-truth world. We are taken to places we may not always want to go, but there is a desperate urgency and honest candour to the band&#8217;s art and their bold mastery of sound; they blend dream-pop\/psych-rock\/avant-punk soundscapes and so much more. Maybe a new genre needs creating: doom-\/nightmare-pop.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>The world is on fire and Trupa Trupa offer no easy solutions, but rather introspective reflection on the human condition and the sick society we have unleashed upon ourselves \u2013 soothsayers of sorts.
