[\/nk_text][vc_single_image image=”560″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]One of the most precious gems I picked from the Moving Out Series<\/strong><\/a> was to realise how many friends I had made. I\u2019ve been living in Krak\u00f3w for five years. There\u2019s a caveat to that though: Over the last few years my work had me traveling extensively. I would usually be in Krak\u00f3w for about six or seven months of any given year. And when one does that much traveling, there are things one doesn\u2019t keep stock of. A rolling stone gathers no moss – as the saying goes. I had never had any occasion to have all my friends in one room at the same time. Until now. Until the Moving Out Concert Series. Moreover, I hadn\u2019t even realised the amount of connections, friendships, and bonds I had built over these years. In some sense I figured that to most of the people who knew me in the city, I was always just a passing figure – I\u2019d be around for some time; but I was away most of the time.<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_text]Each person I asked agreed and got on board without any hesitation. Just like an infant child would have no enemies, so too was this entire project showered with so much love, blessing, and good will – from all the performers and the audience members alike. This thought alone humbles me and fills me with insurmountable gratitude.<\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”676″][nk_text]And so I would like to send a deep and humble \u2018thank you\u2019<\/em> to all my friends who participated and contributed to this concert series. It is the most significant (public) endeavour I have undertaken in Krak\u00f3w so far. Thank you all for your time, thank you for your magic, thank you for your music, and thank you for saying yes. You were all the droplets of rain that nourished the soil for the blossoming of this project. It could not have happened without you. I look forward to the next five years together. Oftentimes, while all the members of the band would be settling in and getting ready for rehearsals, Grzegorz would be pushing buttons on his pedal boards, noodling away at his guitar, spelling all sorts of appetising chords and musical delights. He would often get my musical taste-buds salivating. I would say to him, \u201cwe absolutely have to do something with this\u2026\u201d Grzegorz would just smile and say, \u201cyeah, sure, why not?\u201d<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”654″][vc_single_image image=”570″ img_size=”large”][nk_text]We finally had an opportunity to launch the project. We had our premier performance in February 2020 at the opening of an art exhibition that was hosted by another one of my good friends in Krakow, Tomasz We\u0142na. The exhibition was called \u201cWaiting for the Wind\u201d (czekaj\u0105c na wiatr). It was a huge success and propelled our enthusiasm and faith in the project. All Grzegorz and I wanted were more opportunities to play. It was obvious to me to have this duo start and end off the Moving Out Concert Series. <\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”568,569″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”karollukasz”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Karol Ochodek & \u0141ukasz Pietrzak<\/strong>[\/nk_title][nk_text]Karol and I <\/b>were standing on the sidewalk outside a music venue in Kazimierz one cold winter\u2019s night. We got talking about this and that. Naturally, Karol asked about my experience and life in Poland as a South African. I shared some of my many realisations with him; and at one moment, in his very quiet, well-spoken, and gentle way, Karol thanked me for choosing to stay in this city (Krakow). As if to say \u201cyou could have chosen to build your career and live your life anywhere, but thank you for choosing to stay here and for being with us\u201d. It was one of the profoundest compliments I received, and it\u2019s a memory I will probably remember until the end of my days. Thank you, Karol.<\/span>[\/nk_text][vc_single_image image=”572″ img_size=”large”][nk_text]My earliest memory of Lukasz<\/a><\/b> was at a jam session at a venue called \u201cSzpitalna 1\u201d. That must have been four or five years ago. It\u2019s been an incredible journey seeing him grow as a musician. I can recall many moments sitting in the crowd at a jam session or concert listening to Lukasz and thinking to myself, \u201cwow\u2026 it\u2019s so incredible how much energy he generates with his harmonica playing.\u201d We\u2019ve become more than decent friends over the years. I always appreciate our conversations. I feel like I learn something from Lukasz each and every time we speak. And there\u2019s always a joke or four.<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”574″][vc_single_image image=”573″ img_size=”large”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”david”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]David Grant<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_single_image image=”578″ img_size=”large”][nk_text]Dave<\/a> and I <\/b>shared a stage a few times. Saturday nights in the deep underground of Krakow\u2019s cover-band scene. Every now and then Dave would stop by when I was busking on the streets in the city. He would always spare a coin and a moment to talk. We would usually just speak about this and that. But he is a familiar face that I like seeing around town. He performed a solo set at a cafe in the summer. His performance was raw and heart-felt, without any frills. I\u2019m happy I was there. And so I asked him to come back; to come here for the Moving Out Series. I hadn\u2019t met them until these performances. I\u2019m glad I had the chance to work with both of them. I was pleasantly surprised to see their lyrical prowess. If I were given the chance of having one of my musical wishes be fulfilled, I would have a difficult time choosing what it would be. There are so many things I wish I could be better at as a musician. But one thing I\u2019ve wished for a long time is the ability to write lyrics and to write them well. The kind that spoke of exactly what I wanted to express without being trite or pedestrian. I appreciate good lyrics and am a champion of the written and spoken word. Both Dustin and Andrea\u2019s sets were a balanced mix of familiar covers and original material. It was their original songs that interested me the most. I\u2019m happy they came. And happier still that they were both keen to share their own works.\u00a0<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”672″][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”659″][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”588,585,583,586,587,584,589″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”michele”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Michele Cuscito<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”592″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]Michele was the first musician who opened the door to the music community to me<\/b> when I moved to Krakow. He\u2019s become somewhat of a big brother over the years. But like the kind of big brother \u201cthat travels for work\u201d. What do I mean? I mean it in the sense that he and I don\u2019t get to see each other very often, but when we meet, the mutual sense and feeling of care, admiration, and respect is so real and runs so deep.<\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_text]The first time we met was underneath the Florianska gate in Krakow. Michele was busking. I walked by with my saxophone on my shoulder. Michele noticed it and called out to me. We got talking. Naturally, Michele asked where I was from. I told him Cape Town, South Africa. And without another word he picked up his guitar and started singing \u201cSugarman\u201d by Rodriguez – obviously knowing that I would identify with the song immediately. He started inviting me to the jam sessions that he hosts at Harris Piano Jazz Bar. Thanks to him, and his invitations, I met and know most of the musicians I work with in the city today.<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_text]Asking him to perform for the Moving Out concert series was a no-brainer. When I sent him the message to ask if he would be willing to play, I was so moved by the five words he sent in response: \u201cYou can count on me\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What a genuine guy\u2026<\/span>[\/nk_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”593″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”591″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”luiz”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Luiz Doboszewski<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”600″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]Jam sessions at Harris Piano Jazz Bar would be the place where Luiz and I would often meet.<\/b> I remember one significant conversation I was having with Luiz and Michele one night about the perils of institutionalised music. More than that, and perhaps humorously so, about two or three weeks before the Moving Out Series, at one of these said jam sessions, Luiz turned to me and said \u201cyou know I still haven\u2019t played with you on stage.\u201d Which I found very hard to believe. \u201cBut how could that be? We\u2019ve been at the same jam sessions so many times,\u201d I thought to myself. Luiz continued, \u201cwe were on stage together only one time – and that one time you played bass guitar!\u201d We both laughed. We changed that detail that very night. I got my saxophone and Luiz got his guitar, and we got on stage together. Luiz asked me if he could perform for the Moving Out Series. I was more than happy to honour his request.\u00a0<\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”603,604,602,601″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”piotr”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Piotr Libelt<\/strong>[\/nk_title][nk_text]The first time I met Piotr<\/a><\/b> was at a jam session at Klub Buda about two years ago. There aren\u2019t that many pianists in Krakow. And I really liked Piotr\u2019s style. Our musical tastes aligned. Especially our affinity for the slower, groovier, \u2018chill\u2019, R&B, lounge-esque end of the musical spectrum. We’ve always wanted to play together, and we finally got to collaborate for this concert series. <\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”662″][vc_single_image image=”609″ img_size=”large”][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”607,610″][vc_single_image image=”608″ img_size=”large”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”giles”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Giles Barratt<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”615″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]Giles<\/a> is a wanderer<\/b>, literally and musically. He meanders the streets of Krakow with his camera and roams the frets of his guitar with as much playfulness and ease.<\/span><\/p>\n

His fingers are ready to snap a shot as to stroke a chord. Giles and I would run into each other at venues around town. I learnt that he was a jazz guitarist, and a serious one at that. A purist of sorts. I\u2019ve enjoyed the discussions we\u2019ve had. There are so many nuances and subtleties in music. The kind that the regular Joe wouldn\u2019t be privy to. But frighteningly, many musicians are oblivious to these subtleties and nuances as well. Giles gets it. It\u2019s always a pleasure finding a kindred spirit. There\u2019s a sense of homecoming about each meeting with him.<\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”614,613″][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”664″][vc_single_image image=”612″ img_size=”large”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”stachura”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Piotr & Patrycja Stachura<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_single_image image=”621″ img_size=”large”][nk_text]Piotr and Patrycja<\/b> were founding members of the first band I ever joined when I moved to Krakow. Patrycja saw me playing in Krakow’s main market square back in March of 2015. She took my business card and emailed me a couple of days later, and asked if I would like to join her project. I said yes. Piotr was the bass player in the group. Our personalities were compatible from the very start. I\u2019d even say that Piotr was my first \u2018friend\u2019 in Krakow. The person I would call to \u2018shoot the breeze\u2019 with. They moved out of Krakow for a few years. I was happy when I learnt they were back in the city. Patrycja sent me a message at the beginning of the corona lockdown in Poland. She said that she was listening to \u201clean on me\u201d by Bill Withers and said that she always thinks of me when she hears this particular song. I played and sang it to her at a rehearsal once – a moment that I had long forgotten, but she never has. This moment always stuck with her, and she reminded me of that. <\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”670″][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”620,623,622,619,618″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”wassim”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Wassim Ibrahim<\/strong>[\/nk_title][nk_text]Sometimes certain people are introduced to our lives and we cannot quite work out whether we would have wanted to meet them sooner, or whether we had met them at just the right time (in present time). I mostly lean toward the latter. <\/span>Wassim<\/a> is such a person for me. <\/b>I met him about two or three weeks before the beginning of the Moving Out Series. Our mutual friend, Juan, arranged a time and place for us to meet each other. Juan was confident that Wassim and I would have good chemistry, and he was right.\u00a0<\/span>[\/nk_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”634″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]Wassim has been a great ambassador to Krakow for the music of his native region and country. His reputation and credentials are far reaching. We found many similarities in\u00a0 our stories – both Wassim and I had to leave our native countries to pursue our musical and artistic careers elsewhere – and we both chose to settle in Poland for many of the same reasons too. When he relayed some of the challenges he faced with this life-changing move, I found it mirrored many of my experiences verbatim. We liked each other immediately. Whether I would have liked to have met Wassim earlier in my life (which, frankly, I was surprised that our paths hadn\u2019t crossed up unto this point), or whether we met at just the right time is irrelevant. More importantly is <\/span>that <\/span><\/i>we met. And surely a meeting that I am grateful for.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wassim brought his friend, Kamil Kruk along for the concert. Kamil played the saw. Yes, the saw. It was great listening to them.<\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”668″][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”635,632,633,631″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”paula”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Paula Wolski<\/strong>[\/nk_title][vc_single_image image=”641″ img_size=”large”][nk_text]Paula<\/a> is another musician<\/b> I was surprised to have not met earlier than the time of this concert series – especially since she and I have so many mutual friends. Her name was orbiting in the ether during the planning stages of the Moving Out Series. I was putting the roster of musicians together and thinking about who I would ask to perform. Her name was mentioned on more than one occasion. \u201cEthan, do you know Paula? This Finnish girl. She plays ukulele and sings. We should ask her to play,\u201d Juan said at one of our meetings. Her name was suggested by another friend as well. And I thought \u201cwho is this elusive, Finnish, Paula that plays ukulele and sings?\u201d<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_audio dark_style=”1″ audio_file=”666″][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”638,637″][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][nk_text]A few days later, the Hot Tamales<\/strong><\/a> band was playing at Klub Buda<\/strong><\/a>. Juan texted me. He asked if I would be coming for the performance. I said that I would. He said, \u201cgood, Paula is here too. I\u2019ll introduce you to her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Juan introduces me to Paula, only for me to realise as we walked up to her that I knew who she was all along! Granted, she and I hadn\u2019t officially met, but I had seen her around a few times. I obviously hadn\u2019t made the connection in my mind that <\/span>she<\/span><\/i> was the Paula that all the signs were pointing to.<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_gallery_images columns=”2″ images=”639,640″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_separator color=”mulled_wine” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”fadeInRight”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][\/vc_section][vc_section el_id=”quartet”][vc_row][vc_column][nk_title like=”” style=””]Moj\u017cesz Tworzyd\u0142o, Kasia Bobik & Miko\u0142aj Spendel<\/strong>[\/nk_title][nk_text]My intention was to have a concert in duo with Mojzesz. <\/b>He called me up a few days after I had asked him. And very tentatively and respectfully, he asked me if I would be open to expanding the band to have four members. Mojzesz knew that my idea for the concerts were to have solo and duo acts (because of the space limitations; the fact that it was an apartment, and keeping the peace with the neighbours was something I considered). I didn\u2019t object to Mojzesz\u2019s request. And I\u2019m really happy that I didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n

[\/nk_text][vc_single_image image=”648″ img_size=”large”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”646″ img_size=”large”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][nk_text]Enter Kasia on percussion and Mikolaj on electric bass.<\/b>[\/nk_text][nk_text]We had our first rehearsal and the chemistry was combustive – bursting with so much inspiration, energy, and drive. I remember toward the end of the rehearsal (all of us still high on what had just preceded in the minutes before) asking them how long they had been playing together. The chemistry was so rich; the kind that (usually) forms only after years of working together. Only to have Mikolaj smile at me and say, \u201cthis is the first time we\u2019re all playing together\u201d. I found it hard to believe. I looked at Mojzesz and he confirmed, \u201cit\u2019s true, Mikolaj and I have never played together before.\u201d<\/span>[\/nk_text][nk_plain_video video=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K5HfebYTTDg”][nk_text]Read more about this amazing quartet \u279e<\/strong><\/a>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_text]This quartet has since gone on to do a handful of performances outside the Moving Out Series. I feel proud to say that at the time of writing this, this particular project is probably the best result that was a direct spin-off from the concert series.
