Now that this fabled venue and its kind owners are sadly no longer active, the memories remain vivid for many of us lucky enough to have frequented the place. The contrast of the tiny stage and the musicians that squeezed themselves onto it and those clinical white and red tiles shimmering behind them \u2013 the last remnants of the butchers that the tea shop had been in its previous incarnation \u2013 was always striking. That night, the clear timbre of Paula&#8217;s voice immediately enrapt me \u2013 mature yet child-like, innocent yet world-weary \u2013 it evoked fond memories of the past, lullabies, dreams, endless summer days, friendships, childhood. Her vocals and fingerpicking style of ukulele playing has been complemented tastefully by the addition of several Krak\u00f3w-based musicians: <strong>Adam Partyka on percussion, Micha\u0142 Bigulak on bass and Kacper Chmura on guitar<\/strong>. The added instrumentation comes as a departure from her raw and stripped-down live sets. I talked to her recently about how it all came about and what it was like collaborating with other musicians on her own material. <em>\u201cIt was amazing. Bliss. It was my first experience of someone else taking my songs and doing something with them. The guys came prepared with wonderful ideas that added to the songs in ways I could never have come up with,\u201d<\/em> she beams. Far from the stress and time constraints which she expected from the recording process, she was totally taken aback at the chilled vibe that everyone exuded and delighted to see her precious songs evolve from their original minimal form. <\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_plain_video video=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZAhltaqLQHk&#8221;][nk_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first single off the album, <\/span><strong><i>Tuuvittelen tuttuain<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is translated as <strong>\u201cI cradle my dearest.\u201d <\/strong><\/span>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_block_quote icon_color=&#8221;rgba(48,117,0,0.5)&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h4><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The atmosphere was so calm and relaxed, everyone was friendly and incredibly supportive. I never thought I could be so serenely happy during the recording of my own material. I imagined I would be a nervous wreck.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014 Paula Wolski<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/nk_block_quote][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_gallery_images columns=&#8221;2&#8243; images=&#8221;895,896&#8243;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;12px&#8221;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening song, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aamul&#8217; varhain<\/strong>,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is upbeat, the tempo driven by the thump of the bass drum which hints at the jubilation to come, while the fine violin work from Paolo Cavalaglio rounds things off. The first single off the album, <\/span><strong><i>Tuuvittelen tuttuain<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is translated as <em>\u201cI cradle my dearest.\u201d<\/em> The first verse is basically four different alliterated refrains of saying \u201cI&#8217;m lulling my baby to sleep.\u201d Paula&#8217;s recognisable fingerpicking style and the hi-hat&#8217;s chime rock us gently into the heart of the song, swaddling the listener in warmth and a familiar maternal embrace, while <a href=\"https:\/\/krakowmusic.com\/lukasz-pietrzak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u0141ukasz Pietrzak<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s chugging steam engine harmonica comes rolling by to snap us out of our hypnosis and along a dusty train track that stretches way out west.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;897&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my favourite songs on the album is the haunting and ethereal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Etsi itsellesi toinen<\/strong>. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here the interplay between the chiding voice, disconcerting backing vocals and ukulele creates an air of approaching menace and dread. It is an incantation to keep away those who mean us harm, a Finnish cauldron bubbling over with lacerating lyrics to exorcise evil, a musical spell cast to ward off malevolence. Paula states matter-of-factly that the song was indeed born from personal experience. <em>\u201cWell, I was in a situation where I wished I could make someone lose interest in me, and the song was an expression of that wish.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][nk_title like=&#8221;&#8221; style=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>LATO. Paula&#8217;s ageless voice is showcased on several majestic songs, including the gentle drone lullaby melody of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Idan laulu<\/strong>. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bucolic atmosphere conjured here is utterly enchanting and harks back nostalgically to the Finnish idyll of nature and the bonds of family \u2013 past, present and future \u2013 that bind us; like the entangled roots of trees underneath a vast forest, our interconnectedness is inescapable. Paula explains, <em>\u201cThis song is for my niece, Ida. I wrote it when we were at a summer cottage in Finland during a heat wave. She was a baby then. &#8216;Grow slowly like a pine tree. The forest lets the sapling grow. The glow of this summer will last through all the years. These trees, long standing. Bygone generations live within us.&#8217;\u201d<\/em> Curiously, the magnificent primeval forest near where I live in Krak\u00f3w also has Paula&#8217;s surname: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inyourpocket.com\/krakow\/las-wolski-krakows-forest-sanctuary_71113f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Las Wolski<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The playful mood on <\/span><strong><i>Liike on kaunis<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talks of the indecision and fumbling of the central character, unlike my initial misplaced thought that it must be about someone called Liike from Kaunas \u2013 in Lithuania. Google Translate&#8217;s incompetence in Finnish exposed for all to see. On this number the band really let loose, and you can picture them all in that barn in the Polish countryside under a harvest moon getting their kicks; the slight tempo speed-up at the end just confirms how much they are relishing playing together. Who wouldn&#8217;t be jealous not to have witnessed first hand some of that Finnish bluegrass hootenanny? This infectious mood carries on into the swinging folk-vibe of <\/span><strong><i>Minun silm\u00e4t ja sinun silm\u00e4t<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the upbeat stomp of the second single, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pime\u00e4n keh\u00e4<\/strong>. <\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p>[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][nk_plain_video video=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QCmVF1DYSDw&#8221;][nk_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second single, <\/span><strong><i>Pime\u00e4n keh\u00e4,\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>features a male choir:\u00a0Tomasz Ablewski, Radek Baranowski, Micha\u0142 Bigulak,\u00a0Kacper Chmura, Piotr Grzegorowski, Piotr Mikler, Daniel Moskal,\u00a0Maksymilian Mroczkowski, Szymon Paczkowski, Adam Partyka,\u00a0Radoslaw Rozycki.[\/nk_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][nk_text]<strong><i>On jo my\u00f6h\u00e4 <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is quite simply gorgeous, one lover&#8217;s ode to another, where she pleads with him to come home, <em>\u201cit&#8217;s getting late, the wind is soft but a chill is coming, come here, come home where it&#8217;s warm.\u201d<\/em> Full credit to the musicians who collaborated on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for they are rarely overbearing, always subtle and skilfully understated. Their deft touches \u2013 at times the lack of touch altogether \u2013 transform these delicate fragile compositions. The beguiling concluding number on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Alijai sorja<\/strong>, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has Paula&#8217;s voice and ukulele playing set to the plaintive cry of a traditional Finnish folktale. It is heart-wrenching, the multitracked vocals and reverby chorus-effect merely adding to that otherworldly sense of loss and longing. The protagonist explains how much she misses her blue-eyed beloved, telling us that she might even die of longing if he ever forgot about her. You cannot help but believe those words.<\/span>[\/nk_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;904&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221;][nk_text]<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is the dark and light of both winter and summer on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lato<\/strong>,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but I would love to see shades of autumn and spring too. I feel there is room for Paula to explore more intricate moods, complex melodies, sounds, different instrumentation \u2013 even lyrics in English to broaden the general appeal, if that is something she is even interested in.
