The inescapable undertow of the cello, its deep resonance grounding the soaring vocals to the earth with spiky lyrics that cut and prodded; the expressive tightness of the cajon acting as a springboard for the loose, trancey guitar-picking that would eventually guide us into a labyrinth of various time signatures and loops. In turns soulful, innovative, macabre, gut-wrenching. What is this? I thought to myself – avante-goth-folk? As we sat on the carpet, closing our eyes and letting the sound crash over us, I couldn’t remember the last time a room reverberated with such emotional intensity. Shaun ONeill for Kraków Music
